I guess it comes down to what you were expecting. useradd doesn't
create the home directory unless you specify the '-m' parameter,
Redhat always seemed to do things it's own way whereas Gentoo and
other distros default to the standard GNU behaviour on this...

As for you gnome problems, on the gentoo site is desktop and gnome
howtos. This really is a distro for ultimate customisation, extreme
optimisation; generally for developers, enthusiasts and hackers. If
you were after something a little more turn-key, I don't think you'll
find it here. It's probably closer to Linux From Scratch if you've
heard of that, with better package management through the power of
portage.
