It Comes down to Debian preferring not to just 'go ahead' and update
stuff. One of Debian's downfalls is their long wait time to the next
release, but then that is also their plus side - stable. Things just
don't change quick enough....

Ubuntu has taken the stable Debian, and went ahead to allow it to be
updated more frequently, in the guize of ubuntu updates.

Hence - Debian is stuck with the defective drivers, and ubuntu is not.

don't get me wrong I LOVE Debian - I even got the t-shirt that says so ;)
