FAT table is the problem, as you will have bits of files all over the place,
unless they are all defragmented.

If all the files were defragmented, and you have lots and lots of time, using
something like Norton's Utilities' Disk Editor, and a week, or a couple of
weeks, may get some data recovered, depending on the format of the files.

At one stage, my XT HDD was formatted, and, unformatting it was like reversing a
vasectomy, and, about as effective (I believe the succes rate of reversing a
vasectomy is supposed to be about 30%).

I suggest that the best way forward, is just to admit that you stuffed up, and
write off the lost data, accept the penalty, and, organise a backup procedure to
be strictly followed for the future, as, apart from human problems, hardware,
and power supply, problems can easily and frequently, achieve the same result.

Sorry I can't help more. I know from experience (and many losses of data, from
OS crashes, and other causes), how painful it is to lose data.
