BTW: cp has a number of advantages such as.

  * simpler command line
  * presumably it detects target block size and does transfers in an
    optimal manner whereas you have to do this manually for dd
  * potentially allows for copies to secured/encrypted media where dd
    may/maynot

Especially the bit about automatically handling the block size can make 
a massive difference in completion speed.
