You can possibly boot your Mac from a LiveCD.
Alternatively you can run something like Virtual Box and install Linux in
that.
For reference, on my iMac I'm using VMware Fusion with multiple virtual
machines running various flavours of Linux.
Finally, if you want to use Linux tools on your Mac, you can install
homebrew which is a package manager that allows you to install various
Linux packages.
