Context: $job - 1 was at an ISP, and I ended up building and
maintaining the call routing between our customers and our upstream carrier.

I'm astonished we can make phone calls at all. All the carrier routing
stuff is absolutely cooked, and you can end up with number ports that go
through, and customers not being able to receive phone calls from everyone
except some random mobile that happens to be an important client.

One thing I did note, our upstream did no validation of our outbound caller
id. I know this, because I screwed up in testing and set the wrong one, and
got very confused when I called myself and the number that came through I
didn't recognise.

It's just that it's illegal to set the wrong caller id, but best I could
tell, our SIP packets just flowed on unaltered all the way to their
destination.

I have lots of war stories from that place. And I *never* want to work with
VoIP again!
